THANK YOU! As a volunteer, you are amazing and generous with your time and talents. We cannot say thank you enough (but we will try). There are a few things you should know, however. Please read the following carefully before agreeing to. If you do not agree, please contact the Birkie office at ski@canadianbirkie.com and we can chat.
THANK YOU (again). Your contribution of time will make the first Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking successful. This waiver will let you know about how we will use your information, risks of being a volunteer, and a code of conduct. Most of the following is common sense (unfortunately, 'Common sense is not so common', Voltaire).
Who Are the Parties? The following waiver has two or possibly three parties. The Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking falls under the Canadian Birkebeiner Society (the Birkie), a registered Alberta Society. You, as an adult volunteer are the other party. If you are under the age of 18, a responsible parent or guardian must provide consent to the following (yes, I know you are old enough to drive, but that is the law, sorry).
Safety and Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking. The Birkie takes safety very seriously for participants, the public, and volunteers. Please attend the volunteer orientation. At this session, you will learn about the safety protocols, what to do in case of an emergency, and the risks of your particular role. The Birkie has Alberta Workers Compensation Board coverage. As a result, it is CRITICAL that you check in and out of your volunteer role so we know when your are on site and when you are on your way home. Prior to volunteering, you MUST attend the pre-event tail gate briefing about the relevant safety risks.
Safety Risks. As in life, there are risks to volunteering. Hopefully the worst that you will encounter will be the drive out to the event, brilliant sunshine, hungry mosquitoes, and the occasional aggressive hornet. Nevertheless, you will be volunteering in a semi-wilderness area. It is important to let your captain or co-volunteers know where you are. You should be in sight of other volunteers not only for your safety but in case you need to summon help. The weather hopefully will be great but this is Alberta (dress for heat, rain, snow, hail, or freezing temperatures - and that is just the first two hours of the Event!). Other risks may include tripping, being hit by a speeding bike, wild animals, etc. Will these risks materialize; probably not, but now you are aware.
Use of Information. By completing this form, your information will be added to the Birkie volunteer database. The information will be used exclusively to assign volunteers to volunteer opportunities. Your information will never be shared or sold to anyone outside of the Birkie. You can opt in/out of communications at anytime.
Code of Conduct. In a word, be kind to your fellow volunteers, riders, and members of the public. Be the person your dog thinks you are (umm, if you own a dog. Who knows what your cat thinks about you.). Some other commons sense things are:
1. All volunteers shall make every effort to present the Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking in a positive way and shall not do anything to intentionally embarrass or harm the Event and its affiliates.
2. There shall be no use/consumption of alcohol, cannabis, or illegal substances by any volunteer who is on duty on the Event site, or by any underage volunteer. Abuse of this will result in immediate dismissal of the volunteer(s) from the Event.
3. All volunteers shall treat other volunteers, performers, staff and the public with respect. If a problem arises, resolution should be deferred to the Race Director.
4. I agree to honor my commitment to the shift(s) I am scheduled for and to fulfill the responsibilities required of a volunteer with the Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking to the best of my ability.
5. Photographers and videographers will be on site during the festival. By volunteering, you are granting permission the Birkie to gather and use personal data provided during registration and post-event reporting, video or audio recordings, or any other record of this event for any legitimate purpose. Worried about what this means? Check out our website, YouTube Channel and FaceBook. For the most part, if your image is recorded, we will make you look "Fabolous" (sorry, no guarantees).
6. No volunteer shall use for their own advantage any property or monies belonging to the Event. All volunteers must be honest and trustworthy.
7. All volunteers under the age of 18 MUST be under the supervision of parent or guardian. This person is entirely responsible for any minors during the volunteer shift.
8. A volunteer survey will come to you after the event. Please complete it and let us know your thoughts about the event, your volunteer, experience, the pilot volunteer management system we are using (VolunteerLocal), and whether you want to come back and volunteer with the Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking or other Birkie cool events.
9. I agree to comply with and honor the Code of Conduct of the Tour de L'Alberta|Biking Like A Viking Off-Road Cycle Rase as stated above.
